Exploring the way to escape suffering and achieve happiness: from religious wisdom to mindfulness practice

In today's fast-paced, stressful life, people often long to find a way to find inner peace and relief from suffering and happiness. Today we’ll take a closer look at how to understand and achieve this from the perspectives of different religious wisdom and mindfulness practices.

Finding wisdom in religious thought

  • Multi-religious participation and insights : In the process of searching for answers to life, many people will get involved in different religious thoughts, such as Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity, and Buddhism. After reaching their 20s, some people studied Taoism and Confucianism represented by Confucius, but they felt that Buddhist thought was more suitable for them. Taoism has a profound ideological foundation, originating from the Tao Te Ching. It is actually a philosophy of life that tells people that they cannot always expect answers from others and must rely on themselves to explore the true meaning of life. When Christianity is faced with questions such as "What is God?" and "What is heaven?" it is sometimes difficult to give satisfactory answers.
  • Buddhist explanations of happiness and suffering : Buddhism has many explanations of the truth of life. For example, relevant content will be organized into different categories and mention concepts such as what suffering is and what hell is, so that people understand that life is actually in a cycle of reincarnation. Even though we are humans now, we may have been from hell before, but most of us don't remember it. For ordinary people living in the present and facing the pressure of many external expectations such as work and family, Buddhism provides a way of thinking, which is to first clarify personal beliefs, find answers and understand oneself from beliefs.

Mindfulness practices for meditation and mindfulness

  • The meaning and starting point of meditation : Meditation is a path that can be chosen and is not necessarily equivalent to religious behavior. Zen practice usually begins with meditation. When we quiet down, we can not only hear our inner voice, but also see the external world more clearly, and then understand the source of pain and what we should do. In this way, we can dispel the fog in our lives and see clearly the root causes of stress. For example, workplace stress may stem from worrying about what your boss and co-workers think of your work, or worrying about not getting a promotion or making money. As a result, neither external expectations nor internal desires are met.
  • The connotation and practice of samatha and vipassana : "Samatha and vipassanā" is an important part of practice. It emphasizes observing various thoughts arising in the heart, such as desire, hatred, happiness or unhappiness, etc. When these thoughts appear, do not resist, resist or give up forcefully, but observe their existence objectively. Because thoughts themselves come and go, as long as you quietly observe them, they will naturally slowly dissipate. During the training process, we need to have two states of "awareness" and "mind".
  • Specific training methods and mentality : First, find a quiet place to sit down and focus on breathing. As you begin to focus on your breathing, thoughts will appear. Don’t get discouraged at this point and don’t label these thoughts as “good” or “bad,” just observe them. Many times, our thoughts may be worries about the past or anxieties about the future, and that’s normal. The important thing is to be patient with yourself. You may only be able to hold it for 5 minutes at first. As time goes by, you can slowly extend the time to gradually calm down your mind.

The connection between inner peace and life

Nowadays, people live a fast-paced life and are busy in different scenes like robots, but rarely give themselves time to calm down and face themselves. However, even just 5 to 10 minutes of calm each day may bring inner peace and reduce conflict in family relationships. Broadly speaking, many wars in the world are also caused by people's inner greed and dissatisfaction. They feel that "I" is different from "you" and want to snatch more from others. If everyone could calm down and face themselves at all times, perhaps a lot of disputes and wars could be reduced. As Gandhi said: “What is gained with the sword will be lost with the sword.” Only contentment can make life more peaceful.

In short, whether we draw nourishment from religious wisdom, practice mindfulness, or set aside time for ourselves to meditate, it is all so that we can better understand life, see through pain and joy, gain inner peace, and achieve a state of freedom. Gain happiness from pain. I hope everyone can find their own peace and tranquility in this complicated world. You are also welcome to share your insights and thoughts in the comment area.
