In the long journey of life, age often seems to be a shackle that restrains people from moving forward. Especially for single women, the pressure from society and family, as well as confusion about the future, are like a gap that is difficult to cross. However, there is a 73-year-old single female teacher who uses her own experience to prove to us that reading can break through all obstacles and rewrite the trajectory of life.
When he was 18 years old, Teacher Xiu went to the countryside to work in farming. It was a period of spiritual desolation. After graduating from junior high school in Ningbo, I faced the dilemma of having no education and no job. While waiting, eight full years passed. Then, I spent another three years in the queue-jumping place. But even in such difficult circumstances, she was still full of intellectual curiosity. Books were scarce at that time, and every book was precious and everyone rushed to pass it around. She read voraciously and learned English through the radio. She even listened to the radio station in the middle of the night and was immersed in the world of music. The accumulation of these bits and pieces became the cornerstone for her to change her destiny in the future.
In 1977, Teacher Xiu took the college entrance examination for the first time. Although she was not admitted due to household registration issues, her English scores were excellent and caused quite a stir in the local area. In 1978, with her father's encouragement, she seized the opportunity to apply again and finally got into college. This experience not only demonstrated her persistent pursuit of knowledge, but also reflected her tenacity to never give up in difficult situations.
After graduating from university, Mr. Xiu stayed at the school to teach and signed a five-year contract. However, she was not satisfied with this. At the age of 35, she seized the opportunity given by the principal and resolutely applied for a master's degree. At that time, she hastily chose the translation major. There are only three schools in the country enrolling students, so places are scarce. But she passed the exam successfully with her courage and strength. After graduation, she became a university teacher. Although some students choose to join economic and trade companies to obtain higher income, she is full of love for the teaching profession and sticks to her job until retirement.
When it comes to marriage, Teacher Xiu has a unique experience. He started his own life after graduating from college at the age of 32, got married while working and studying in Beijing, and divorced before going abroad. Abroad, she married again, but chose to separate because her husband could not adapt to life in his hometown. These experiences made her understand that marriage requires meeting the right person and cannot be forced. She must respect herself and the other person.
At the age of 42, Teacher Xiu went to the United States to study for a doctorate. When she first arrived in the United States, she had difficulty speaking in class because her classmates spoke too fast for her to follow. But by agreeing on a secret code with her teacher, she gradually overcame many obstacles and won praise from her professor with her unique perspective.
In her 11 years in the United States, she never felt lonely. She made friends through cooking and was invited to teach Chinese cuisine. Her life is colorful. She faces life with a positive attitude and does not worry about whether she is being discriminated against. Instead, she enjoyed life to the fullest by reading, making friends, and traveling.
Nowadays, in the new media era, competition is becoming increasingly fierce. Teacher Xiu believes that reading is still an effective way to change your destiny. For ordinary people without background, studying is a stepping stone to obtain employment opportunities. She encouraged young people not to rush for stability, but to take risks bravely, and only choose to enter higher education, take the public examination, or take the civil service examination when they are in their 20s. At the same time, she emphasized that age is not a limit. The elderly have rich life experience and should be more confident.
Teacher Xiu’s retirement life is equally exciting. She rented out rooms to college students, lived with them and their three dogs, and hosted frequent parties. Her experience has undoubtedly inspired many people facing age anxiety and single anxiety: boldly choose the life you want, and don't be bound by the inherent evaluation system. As she said, always be hopeful and optimistic about life.
