Four books that helped me embrace my 30-year-old non-working life

Have you ever lost your way in the busyness of the workplace and longed to find a sky of your own? Perhaps, like me, you once thought that promotion and salary increase were all pursuits in life. But today, I want to share four books that completely changed my views on work and life, and allowed me to bravely choose not to work in life at the age of 30.

First, there is "Finite and Infinite Games." This book made me realize that what we have been playing is actually a limited game-a zero-sum game. In this game, winning and losing, gains and losses always go hand in hand. However, life should not just be this zero-sum game, it should be an infinite game, with no specific rules or fixed goals, only constant experience and creation to explore the infinite possibilities of life.

Next, there’s The Four-Hour Workweek. This book changed my perception of work and time. It made me understand that doing less meaningless work does not mean laziness. True laziness is tolerating dissatisfaction with the status quo and letting circumstances or other people determine our lives. This book made me realize that we should allocate "mini-retirements" throughout our lives instead of waiting until retirement to enjoy them. Now is the future, and we should cherish every moment and do things that are truly important to us.

The third book, "The Psychology of Money." It made me re-examine the relationship between money and happiness. We often think that going to work is to make money, but the happiness that money brings us is actually limited. What really determines our happiness or not is our control over time. When we can freely control our time and do what we want to do, that kind of time freedom is where true happiness lies. This book made me understand that we should not pursue money endlessly, but should learn to free up our time.

Finally, I want to say that these four books did not encourage me to blindly quit my job. They just showed me a world outside of work and made me understand how vast life is. Age is not an obstacle that prevents us from pursuing our dreams. Everyone has the right to choose the life they want. Infinite games in the wilderness are waiting for us. As long as we bravely pursue and create, we can find our own piece of sky.

So, if you are tired of the busyness and constraints in the workplace, you may wish to read these four books. Perhaps, they can also bring you some inspiration and courage, allowing you to bravely take that step to pursue the life that truly belongs to you and does not work.
