At the age of 32, how I started my European summer school trip: a new experience of low-cost living and studying abroad

The 32-year-old Lin An is about to bid farewell to Dali and embark on a three-month journey to live in Europe. The first stop is Utrecht in the Netherlands, where I will start a unique summer school study life. Today I would like to share with you my plan for the first stop of this European trip.

1. What is summer school?

Summer schools in many universities in Europe and the United States are open from a few days to two months during the summer vacation, providing relevant professional learning opportunities for off-campus students and even non-student groups. It is like a fusion of study tour and study abroad, suitable for people with different needs: -Student group : If college students want to apply for an exchange program and accumulate credits and professional experience for future master's or doctoral studies, summer school is a good choice. - Travel enthusiasts : For people like me who want to live in Europe for a short period of time, don’t want to be limited by traditional travel methods, and want to experience study tours, Summer School is very suitable. -Study Abroad Attendant : For those who plan to study abroad but are not sure whether it is suitable for them due to the high cost, summer school can provide an opportunity to experience study abroad life in advance.

2. How to apply for summer school

There are three main ways to apply for summer school: - Xiaohongshu search : First, search the keyword "summer school" on Xiaohongshu, and you can browse related information shared by many seniors. This is a convenient way to learn about summer school. - Google precise search : After having a preliminary understanding of the summer school, use Google to conduct a specific search. For example, if you want to know about European summer schools, search for "EUROPE+summer schools" and many websites offering summer school programs will appear. In my case, I found my favorite project on the European Summer School website. The site can also be filtered by major, country, and other criteria. I have clear goals, focusing on languages, humanities and social sciences, and business. After some screening, I found a matching language program at Utrecht University. -Refer to specific websites : Here are a few summer school-related websites that I know of. You can take a screenshot and save it (the specific website is not mentioned in the article and can be supplemented according to the actual situation).

3. Summer School Costs and Money Saving Strategies

The tuition fee for the four-week summer school at Utrecht University I applied for is 1080 euros. Compared with the monthly tuition fees of some language schools in China, which often cost tens of thousands, it is still acceptable in Europe. However, the school's summer school does not include accommodation. If you choose a student apartment provided by the school, you need to pay an additional 850 euros, which is equivalent to nearly 1,900 euros per month. But in fact, there are many ways to save money by studying in summer school: - Apply for scholarship programs : You can try to apply for summer school programs with scholarships to reduce financial pressure. - Choose short-term courses : When searching, you will find many summer school courses as short as three or five days, with tuition fees of only 100-200 euros. You can experience the atmosphere of a European university while traveling. -Choose a cost-effective city : Prices, living costs, and transportation costs in the Netherlands are relatively high. If you have a limited budget, you can consider Eastern European cities such as Budapest and Prague, such as Poland and Lithuania. If you are not pursuing credits from prestigious schools and just want study tour experience, you have many options.

Once I arrive in the Netherlands, I will continue photographing the real life and learning experience of studying for a month at the Utrecht Summer School. Interested friends can continue to follow my channel. Looking forward to sharing more excitement with you in the Netherlands!
