From accountant to digital nomad: pursuing a “feeling” career

Have you ever felt trapped in your job and longed to pursue your true passion? My story may give you some inspiration.

In college, I studied in the Accounting Department of Xiamen University. However, from the first day, I felt that I was not suitable for this profession. So, I started frantically trying various things that had nothing to do with accounting: opening a milk tea shop, setting up a studio, and setting up a photography platform. During my senior year, I completely ignored the fall recruitment and ended up joining a small company with only three people after graduation. Although the salary was meager, I found unprecedented happiness there.

In that company, I wore many hats: product manager, UI designer, and operations. We are committed to creating the coolest publishing SARS in the world. When the publishing presidents of Zhejiang University and Shandong University came to our humble office and saw our product interface, their eyes lit up. At that time, I completely forgot about the meager salary and was immersed in the huge sense of accomplishment.

Later, I moved to Shenzhen and became the product leader of a company. I crammed in all kinds of knowledge and worked hard to improve myself, and soon achieved remarkable results. However, as time went by, I gradually felt that my work became boring and I entered a career bottleneck period.

In search of new challenges, I joined ByteDance and became a product manager. Although my co-workers were very friendly, the work content made me feel boring. I started thinking: Is this the life I want? Where will I be in ten years?

So, I made an incomprehensible decision: to switch jobs and become a consultant. However, the transition was not smooth. I felt miserable and out of place. Until a psychological consultation, the counselor asked me why I felt that I was not good enough. I replied: "I have never done consulting before." But he suddenly had an inspiration: "Could this be your advantage?" This sentence woke me up. I gave up pretending to be myself, started showing my true self, and quickly stood out in the commercialization team.

However, I didn't stop there. In order to pursue my true passion, I left ByteDance and became a digital nomad. I joined a company that implemented remote working for all employees and started a free life. I can freely choose where to live and enjoy a high salary while lowering the cost of living. But as time went on, I discovered that this lifestyle wasn’t entirely suitable for me. What I wanted was not just a remote job, but a career where I could get a steady stream of positive feedback.

So, I started a business and built hardware products with friends. This process is full of challenges and fun. At the same time, I also started thinking about how to help more people get rid of jobs they don’t like and find a career that really makes them feel good. I decided to share my experience and explore this issue with more people.

This is my story. From accountant to digital nomad, I’ve been pursuing my true passion. Now, I pass this passion on to you. Are you also willing to explore and pursue that “feeling” career with me?
