In 2024, I launched a global travel plan and visited 8 cities. In this journey full of challenges and opportunities, making money has become an integral part. Today I will share with you my experience and insights on making money on the road.
The reality of making money traveling
The money you make living on the road is often much less than the money you make honestly living in the city. After I started traveling around the world, I lost a lot of local job opportunities and my main income came from taking commercials on the road. However, this kind of income is extremely unstable and irregular, especially overseas, where business opportunities and advertising resources are much less than at home. Because many products and brands have long shipping cycles and high costs, they are unwilling to cooperate with overseas bloggers. However, we still received a lot of business cooperation and promotions in the Netherlands in August. This is due to the many platforms I operate on. At that time I received business orders from about five platforms. Operating on multiple platforms makes me feel more secure, and also makes me understand that I cannot rely too much on a single platform to create economic income.
My personal income composition
- Advertising Revenue : Advertising revenue is my main source of income, but as mentioned before, this income is unstable and irregular. However, through multi-platform operations, the chances of receiving business orders are increased to a certain extent.
- Career consulting income : I have been freelancing for the past 7 years. Over the past few years, I have created an online brand related to freelancing that provides services to those who want to transition into freelancing. During the months of July and August when I was traveling, on average, someone came to me for career consultation every month, and they were charged by the hour. The consulting content covers career development, freelancing, career choices for digital nomads, social media operations, personal IP creation, etc.
- Online product revenue : The free community brand "Freedom Living Room" was founded a few years ago. Last year, it developed an online free library, which is equivalent to an online free learning material package. It is a light-service knowledge-based virtual product with low operating costs and user maintenance costs. As long as users purchase it, they can view it themselves. But because I was lazy on the road and didn’t spend too much time and energy on promotion, the income from this part was not much. However, as long as the product model is well built, it can be considered a considerable passive income.
- Income from cooperation with product delivery : I will cooperate with some recognized, trustworthy guests with excellent products on my own podcast platform, WeChat public account and other platforms, similar to product delivery. My screening threshold is very high, and most of the products I bring are products from friends or customers that I am familiar with and understand. They may be consulting products or course service products. Working with institutions and individuals, this is a relatively long-term passive income.
- Local income : is income earned where you live. For example, when I was in the Netherlands, I sold earrings and jewelry at a market stall and made 150 euros a day. Although it was just a small experiment, I found that living in Europe as a side hustle was possible. The local Dutch girl next to me at the time was a full-time freelance stall owner. She sets up stalls at markets in different cities in the Netherlands every weekend, with a steady flow of customers and considerable income.
Other ways for digital nomads, freelancers and travel bloggers to make money
- Purchasing agents and buyers : This is a common money-making model and has certain user needs.
- Tour groups : such as study tour groups, tourism training groups, etc., which can be organized according to personal characteristics and the parts of the audience's attention.
- Taking on remote projects : Many digital nomads earn income by participating in relatively long-term and stable remote projects at home and abroad.
- Sales of virtual products : including membership products, course products, consulting products, etc. For example, online language teaching teachers, coaches in a certain field, etc., can obtain relatively stable income to attract customers as long as they promote and sell online.
