Have you ever thought that by building your personal brand publicly online, you can not only achieve a harmonious integration of work and family, but also earn considerable income? Today, I will share with you my entrepreneurial and monetization journey, hoping to provide you with some inspiration and motivation.
Everything started at the end of 2020, when I was standing at a crossroads in my life. I was running a startup and couldn't achieve the growth we wanted. At the same time, the impending birth of my first child caused me to rethink how work and family fit into my life. I knew I needed to build my personal brand online, but I had no idea at the time.
My entrepreneurial journey has not been easy. Initially, I just wrote some independent blogs online to share my past failures and reflections. However, these blogs didn’t bring me much attention. I knew I needed to find a way to stand out.
That's when I stumbled upon the concept of "building in public." This value of honesty, transparency and helpfulness aligns with the way I live my life. I see that more and more entrepreneurs are trying to build publicly but lack good resources to help them. So, I decided to be the one to help them.
I started digging into this topic and spent two full months writing a guide on public building. When I finally posted it, over 100 people helped spread the word, and 2,100 people read it in the first three days. Suddenly, I became a well-known name in the "public build" world.
Over the next four months, I continued to work hard on researching and sharing content about public builds. Although no one was a client of mine yet, I could feel that I could build my own product around this niche by helping others build their businesses out in the open.
As a creator and educator, I don’t need to rely on a specific technology. All I needed was a social media platform to reach people and a web hosting platform to run my website. However, in order to accelerate my growth, I chose some tools to assist me, such as Webflow to host my website, Hyperfury to automate my Twitter workflow, etc.
The biggest challenge I face in starting a business is to continue to create new content and share it with others. This meant I needed to come up with a system for generating new ideas, approaching them with a unique perspective, and presenting them in an interesting way. In order to achieve this goal, I constantly try new methods and techniques, such as using Notion to store my ideas and content, using Loom to record screen sharing for my students, etc.
My biggest realization since starting my business is that many new creators create a lot of content but don’t know how to monetize it. There are actually many ways to generate income, but creators must determine which method best suits their skills. For example, my first paid product was a community, but I later discovered it wasn't a good fit for my skills and goals. So, I shifted my attention from managing a community to managing a course, and achieved good results.
Today, my business is growing and I am excited to share my experiences and lessons learned with you. I believe too many creators are following popular content and blindly copying others, but running a company that can grow and scale requires relevant skills, effort, and commitment. The best approach for me is to ask yourself the question: "What is the best way for you to get someone from point A to point B?" and then create an optimal learning journey from there.
Finally, what I want to say is: No matter what entrepreneurial path you choose, you must maintain patience and perseverance. Success doesn't happen overnight, but as long as you keep working hard and believing in yourself, you will be able to achieve your goals. Thank you everyone for reading and supporting! See you next time!
