Indie Developer Milestones: How to Build an Open Source SAAS with $1M in Annual Revenue?

Have you ever wondered how you can make a decent income as an independent developer, or even reach the milestone of $1 million in annual revenue? Today, we will take you into this goal that seems unattainable, but is actually within reach. By sharing our experiences and lessons learned, we hope you can gain inspiration and motivation from them.

Crazy roller coaster ride

Our story began in May 2019 when we launched our paid subscription SAAS business. After a long wait of 324 days, I finally achieved my first monthly recurring revenue of $400. This process was full of challenges and uncertainties, but we never gave up.

A few blog posts gave us an unexpected increase in traffic, taking our revenue from $400 to $10,000 in just nine months. After another ten months of hard work, our annual revenue reached US$500,000. Finally, after eight months, we managed to hit the $1 million mark.

The power of open source

From the beginning, we decided to open source our code and keep our traffic open and transparent. This decision not only earned us the trust of developers, but also allowed us to gain valuable feedback and suggestions from the community. Through open source, we are able to continuously improve our products to meet the needs of our users.

Our product plausible was born from a simple idea: provide a simple, lightweight and privacy-friendly alternative to Google ANALYTICS for websites. After a series of steps such as public testing, the launch of paid subscription services, and embracing the open source world, we gradually became clear about our positioning and target market.

A win-win situation between marketing and cooperation

In the process, we leverage the power of content marketing. By writing blog posts, sharing our story on social media, and participating in community events, we successfully reached a large number of potential users. In addition, we also actively seek cooperation with other influential websites and individuals to enable our products to be disseminated on a wider scale.

It is worth mentioning that we were lucky enough to meet Youku during our search for a marketing co-founder. His addition completes our team and enables us to make greater progress in product development and marketing. The two of us focus on different but equally important tasks, and together we drive plausible's growth and development.

Continuous innovation and optimization

In the process of reaching US$1 million in annual revenue, we continue to innovate and optimize technology. For example, we moved the database from POSTGRESQL to click house to increase the application's speed and ability to handle larger sites. This decision brings significant performance improvements to our products and makes the user experience smoother.

In addition, we also pay attention to user needs and market changes, and adjust product strategies and positioning in a timely manner. Through continuous innovation and optimization, we have been able to stand out in the highly competitive market and win the trust and love of users.

Looking back on the past and looking forward to the future

Today, we have come a long way and achieved the milestone of $1 million in annual revenue. All this is inseparable from our persistence, innovation and cooperation. At the same time, we would also like to thank the open source community and users for their support and encouragement.

Looking to the future, we will continue to be committed to providing users with high-quality products and services. We believe that on the road of open source, as long as we maintain our original aspirations, continue to innovate and optimize, we will be able to create more brilliant achievements.

So, are you ready to embark on this exciting journey? Let us work together to create a better future!
