When you are in a foreign country, busy with research for your master's thesis, and eager to find a job to balance life and study, you will find that this is a quite difficult challenge. This is exactly the dilemma George Orgina, the founder of Local, faced more than two years ago. During his time in Belgium, he spent more than ten hours a day studying for his thesis, while also squeezing in time to search and apply for jobs. In the process, he realized that while there were numerous job search tools on the market, they didn’t really meet the needs of job seekers. This observation ultimately inspired him to found Local.
So how did George draw inspiration from a personal dilemma to create an automated job search platform that generates $180,000 a year?
It all starts with a simple login page. George shared his idea on ready and soon received hundreds of sign-ups. There has been strong interest in this innovative service. Through this landing page, he began gathering feedback, communicating with early adopters, and finding co-founders to take the project forward.
Local's original intention is to help job seekers simplify and automate their job search process. Its first product version was very simple, just a script-based tool that collected job information from Indeed and several other recruitment platforms and emailed it to users. But over time, the platform evolved into a feature-rich, automated job search system.
To promote his business, George began posting in various work-related online communities, offering help and sharing links to his products. This grassroots marketing strategy began to bear fruit, traffic gradually increased, and a few months later, Local even received angel investment.
When it comes to attracting and retaining customers, George and his team focus on content creation and link building. They delve into job search-related topics like interviewing techniques, resume building, and more and engage potential clients with high-quality content. Additionally, they perform backlink campaigns to obtain backlinks from high-authority websites to boost Local’s ranking in search engines.
Today, Local not only provides tools for job seekers, but also provides solutions for businesses and recruiting firms. Their product has evolved into a comprehensive platform that includes features like job search automation, recruiting lead generation, and bootcamps for novice job seekers.
So, regarding future plans, George said that they will continue to experiment and optimize for different customer groups. Their short-term goal is to fix bugs in the product and improve existing features, while the long-term goal is to integrate more recruitment sections and launch more innovative product features.
Through this entrepreneurial experience, George learned many valuable lessons. He believes distribution and marketing are as important as the product itself. A great product needs to be paired with an effective marketing strategy to be successful. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of learning to prioritize. While collecting customer feedback is important, the key is to filter out feedback that is truly meaningful to your business, rather than blindly catering to every customer's needs.
Finally, George advises entrepreneurs to dig deep into the nature of the problem they are solving. Take personal trainers as an example. The problem they really solve is not just to help you get fit or teach you the correct way to exercise, but to help you stick to a plan and be responsible for your training. This ability to gain insight into the true needs of customers is one of the keys to entrepreneurial success.
