Hello everyone! I have been using a Macbook Pro equipped with the M4 Pro chip for a week, and today I will share my overall experience in detail. ( Video link )

1. Configuration choices: trade-offs between size, memory, and storage

1. Size selection: The gains and losses of 16 inches I chose the 16-inch Macbook Pro, M4 Pro chip, 48GB RAM, 512GB storage, optional nano-textured glass. At first, I considered 14 inches, but some netizens reminded me that for writing code and editing videos, 16 inches will undoubtedly improve productivity due to its larger display area. After all, I mostly work from home, so I don’t need to worry too much about portability. The 16-inch model is really heavy, though. If you need to carry your laptop with you every day, the 14-inch model may be more suitable. However, the 16-inch model is quite enjoyable to use. The display area is 30% larger than that of the 14-inch model, and the battery, power adapter, audio and touchpad areas are also larger. Upgrading from 14 inches to 16 inches is only 1,500 yuan more expensive.
2. Memory upgrade: Jumping to 48GB. Upgrading the memory from 24GB to 48GB costs 3,000 yuan, which I think is quite worth it. For example, I open many browser windows, write code, debug programs, and edit videos every day. The larger the memory, the smoother the operation without any lag. Moreover, generally only the storage can be upgraded on the market, and the memory is difficult to replace later, so this upgrade is very necessary.
3. Storage considerations: Is 512GB enough? Based on past experience, I chose 512GB storage. I often use an external solid state drive for editing. This machine only stores code, maven dependencies, docker images and necessary development tool software. My computer is 5 years old and has over 200 GB of free space, so 512 GB is enough for me. Moreover, the entire M4 Pro series comes standard with three Thunderbolt 5 interfaces. We can buy a hard drive box and a Samsung 990 Pro solid-state drive for about 2,000 yuan. External storage is plug and play, convenient and fast, no need to worry about editing speed.

2. Nano textured glass: It looks beautiful, but is it useful?

Nano-texture glass requires an additional price of more than 1,000 yuan as an option. Looking back now, I don't think it's worth it. Many people say that anti-glare and anti-peep screen effects can be achieved by applying film. However, after choosing nano texture glass, you will not be able to experience the characteristics of original high-transparency glass, which feels thankless. The overall look and feel is really good, though. The icons and fonts look comfortable and have a sense of being on paper.

3. Performance Measurement: Performance of Writing Code and Editing

1. Writing Code: The Joy of Super Performance The performance of this computer is more than enough for writing code. Whether it's M4 Pro or M4 Max chip, any model can handle it easily. But in terms of memory, it is recommended to start with at least 36GB. Otherwise, if you open too many database software, browsers, Postman, chat tools and other software, lags will occur. Just like the computer I used before with 16GB of memory, the lag was obvious. This computer compiles and starts projects very quickly, as does class jumping and resource loading.
2. Editor: Simple and efficient productivity improvements For a simple self-media studio like mine, which usually has two cameras, 4K material, and two to three track overlays, this computer is completely sufficient. After converting the material to a proxy, there is basically no delay, and exporting, color rendering, and rendering are much faster than before, greatly improving productivity.
