Have you ever dreamed of getting rid of domestic workplace infighting and looking for new money-making opportunities around the world? Today, I will share my journey from an art student who failed to pass Level 4 to a digital nomad earning US dollars.
Three years ago, a sudden pandemic trapped us in Latin America. As a designer, I face tremendous pressure to survive. In order to make money to survive this difficult period, I started looking for design projects online and tried to become a digital nomad. However, I found that it was not easy to find domestic customers. Because of the time difference, many customers stopped considering me when they heard that I was in America. In order to survive, I had to change my strategy.
In order to solve the time difference problem, I began to think why not directly look for customers in the United States? I tried some human outsourcing platforms but found that the competition was fierce and the prices were low. Later, I realized that posting information on the Internet is actually talking, and looking for job opportunities can be found on almost any website. So, I started searching for freelance jobs on social media websites, and finally found a foreign NFT project on a chat software called Discord.
In this NFT project, I used my design talents and successfully completed the task. After that, I posted this work on social media abroad, and more customers saw it and contacted me. So, I gradually got rid of domestic customers and began to concentrate on serving foreign customers.
In this process, I learned several valuable thoughts:
I began to realize that my time was very valuable. In my previous job, I often spent a lot of time digging into details in pursuit of perfection, resulting in low efficiency. Now, I have learned to allocate time reasonably and pay attention to the work efficiency of each hour. This kind of solid thinking makes my hourly wage in overseas projects higher than in China, and my work pace is slower.
If we can make money in different countries, why only focus on the domestic market? Now there are many opportunities for us to find job opportunities around the world, such as cross-border e-commerce, taking on foreign projects, shooting videos and uploading them to YouTube, etc. In addition, foreign companies offer more remote work positions than domestic companies.
While English is important for communicating with foreign clients, it is not the only obstacle. With the help of modern technological tools, we can use translation software to assist communication. In fact, some types of freelance jobs do not rely entirely on language skills.
Finally, I would like to say to all Chinese people who have experienced involution: You must have confidence in your own abilities! In fact, we are not bad in international competition. During these years of living abroad as a digital nomad, my horizons have broadened a lot, and I have tried many things that I once thought were impossible. As long as we open our minds more and try to change more, we will definitely gain unexpected results.
Now it’s your turn: How can you make USD? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comment area! Let’s explore the possibilities of making money around the world together!
